Steam Frame beta: Valve claims up to 12% longer battery life
Valve has released SteamOS 0.4.3 Beta for Steam Frame, with power-efficiency changes that it says can deliver up to 12% longer battery life during streaming and local gameplay.
That is Valve’s claim, not a guaranteed improvement. The company says results vary with content and frame rate. Pixalrig has not independently benchmarked the battery-life change.
The update is on the Steam Frame Beta channel, with features still being tested. Owners can opt in through Settings → System → System Update Channel.
Streaming users need to check the PC too
The headset’s operating-system update includes SteamVR 2.18.2, but that does not update SteamVR on your host PC.
For the additional work addressing Error 17 connection issues, Valve says PC users must also opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later. Its separate SteamVR release notes identify 2.18.2 as a beta and likewise call for SteamOS 0.4.3 or later on Steam Frame.
These are further reliability fixes, not a promise that every Error 17 scenario has been eliminated. If you are trying the streaming changes, check both update channels rather than assuming the headset download covers the whole setup.
Tracking, controller and connectivity changes
A new accessibility option limits eye tracking to one eye. Enable Show Advanced Settings, then open VR Settings → General → Track Dominant Eye Only.
Valve also lists fixes for controller bindings failing to load in games including Google Earth VR and Thumper, improved focus when using grab/resize handles, and wireless-adapter connectivity fixes affecting users in some countries.
What owners should take from it
The practical appeal is longer unplugged sessions if your workload benefits, alongside fixes for specific input and streaming problems. The release notes do not establish a battery gain for your particular games or settings.
At our 2 October check, Valve’s Steam Frame feed still listed 0.4.3 as Beta; we found no later stable-release announcement. Treat opting in as a choice to test beta software, rather than a necessary update for every owner.
